Each Leaf

Poems by Sarah and David Mook

Sarah Gail Mook was a student in the third grade at Buckingham Friends School in Lahaska, PA when she died suddenly on December 14, 1995. Sarah began writing poems in kindergarten. Reading Sarah's poems over and over during the months following her death inspired her father, David, to begin writing poetry. For David, "poetry is a gift from Sarah, a blessing." EACH LEAF is a celebration of Sarah's life, her gifts, and also embodies a journey through grief into healing and spiritual growth.

We are happy to announce the publication of "Bees With Fish Wings," a beautifully illustrated version of Sarah's poem, "I Play a Game With My Dad," written while Sarah was in first grade. This children's book includes all of Sarah's poems. We hope you will enjoy reading them, perhaps out loud to a budding young poet. You might also use the accompanying worksheets to help them write their very own first poems! Poetry is a valuable vehicle for children to develop literacy skills, a great way to use the imagination and to record their childhood experiences. When you read to children and play games with words, they will learn and so will you.
